There's been a bit of hype around this odd looking Danish word. But what exactly does it mean?
It is used when acknowledging a feeling or moment, whether alone or with friends, at home or out, ordinary or extraordinary as cosy, charming or special.
It's an old concept that's helped many a Dane endure the dark cold months of winter. The Danes see both the domestic and personal life as an art form and not every drudgery to get away from. They incorporate hygge into their daily life so it becomes a natural extension rather than a forced and stressful event.
While it's intrinsically Danish, the concept is not at all foreign to Melbourne, with our Antarctic sourced winter weather and short days, we've long been avid if unknowing subscribers to the concept.
Hygge (or to be “hyggeligt”) doesn’t require learning “how to hygge”, adopting it as a lifestyle or buying anything. It simply requires being present and recognising a moment that feels so sweet, cosy, charming, special or nice that you just have to name the moment.
It's a warm mug and a cosy throw rug, or making a meal with family or friends, reading a book with your kids, or a catch up at a local park followed by a charming little cafe and some hot drinks.
Unknowingly, we are constantly moving through these moments, often without recognising or acknowledging them.
Imagine your older kids cuddling up together with you on the couch, looking through photos of their younger selves, having a laugh as you reminisce about what they used to get up to.
Now imagine not doing that, because you never backed up or printed those 3,000 photos on your smartphone before it was damaged or stolen or simply stopped working?
Moving Stills Photography can capture those special moments and preserve them as little treasures frozen in time for your family to look back on in years to come.
With an unhurried and casual approach, those seemingly mundane or insignificant moments of human interaction are professionally captured through the observant vision of an experienced photographer, and crafted into timeless family keepsake prints filled with authenticity of a time that will never be repeated.
